Garnet Abrasive Sand
Garnet Abrasive Sand is the generic name for the garnet group of minerals. It has the chemical formula Fe3Al2(SiO4)3 and is a cubic crystalline system, with well crystallised garnets being rhombic dodecahedral and tetragonal trioctahedral, the actual mineral is often a mixture of these two crystalline forms, with crystalline particles of varying sizes.
The colour varies with the composition, commonly red, but also brownish red, yellow, white, green and black, glassy, greasy lustre at the fracture, Mohs hardness 6.5 to 7.8, density 3.5 to 4.359/cm3, melting point 700 to 1120 "C, good quality with good chemical stability.
In natural ores, the constituents in the table form solid solutions with each other.
Due to the different mixing ratios, the density, colour and hardness of the garnets are different and ultimately determine their properties.

Garnet abrasives have suitable colour, high hardness, good toughness, suitable particle section type and edge retention, and can be used as filler to replace 20%~30% of brown corundum in resin abrasives, the effect is very ideal. At the same time, the product has also entered the international market, the annual volume of 1:3 is about 500t, with more people out of 1:3 market potential.
Bingyang garnet abrasive is also the main production raw material for sandpaper and emery cloth manufacturers.
Hydro cutting: It is a new application field that has gradually emerged in recent years. It uses garnet abrasive as the cutting medium and relies on high pressure hydro jet for matrix cutting, which is applied to the cutting of oil (natural gas) pipelines, steel, aluminium, glass, ceramics and other components, which is a new, environmentally friendly and safe cutting method.
Physical properties: brownish red or rose red in colour, high density, good self-shape, high hardness, good toughness, ideal for free-grinding or organic bonded abrasives.
Application of Garnet Abrasive Sand
Garnet abrasive is most commonly used as a high-performance blast media, for the cleaning of aluminium and fibreglass structures. Because it is an inert, non-toxic, naturally-occurring mineral, garnet abrasive is also used on sites where water contamination is a concern, such as dry docks, bridges and harbours.
Garnet abrasive does not produce as much dust as other expendable abrasives, making it particularly suited for use in such confined spaces as tanks and containers.
